Easter 2013

We debated whether or not to bring Coach to church…just minutes before the service started, he alerted and caught a high blood sugar following Elle’s Easter candy enjoyment this morning. Thanks, Coach! The only challenge with having him join us was finding a place to kneel.

Eggs-austed!

Clearly…Caraline and Coach find decorating Easter eggs to be an exasperating or exhausting task!

DERRY, N.H. —A defensive tackle and a U.S. senator may not seem like a likely pair to fight against a debilitating disease, but New England Patriot Vince Wilfork and U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen have personal connections to diabetes.

The two were at the Gilbert Hood Middle School in Derry on Tuesday morning to speak with students about the disease.

Wilfork’s father suffered from Type 2 diabetes and passed away in 2002 at the age of 48. Wilfork talked about how he watched his father go blind and how he cared for him since he was 8 years old.

Shaheen’s oldest granddaughter, Elle, has Type 1 diabetes, the most life-threatening form of the disease.

Elle Shaheen was diagnosed with the disease when she was 8. She is now 13 and recently got a specially trained yellow Labrador named Coach who can sense when her blood sugar is too high or low.

Wilfork and Shaheen stressed the importance of proper diet and exercise as a way of preventing or dealing with the disease.

“At the end of the day, we can tackle diabetes,” Wilfork told the assembly. “But it’s going to take all of us.”

Shaheen said she is pushing for more research on the disease and for advancements in medical technology for those who are already affected.
