Hey, Dennis got an alert dog also, but we went a somewhat non-tradtional route. Maya is only a little over 1 1/2 years and not fully trained. We used a trainer in Vermont, Positive Pooch, Maureen Brown-she is awesome, but far away. I am wondering if you know a local trainer? Also wondering what you do about the school day? Joanne (Portsmouth-Dennis is 10 y.o. TID @LHS.)

      Hi Joanne,

I am so happy to hear that Dennis and your family is experiencing the similar joys and challenges of an alert dog. Coach is also about 18 months old and we are working with him regularly, but he did complete public access and diabetes alert training. Unfortunately, I do not know any local trainers as we are still relying on the folks in Kansas to help remotely. I have met someone from Bedford who is working with a local trainer on obedience, etc., but I think she is using a trainer in California for the medic alert component.

Right now, Elle is bringing Coach to school every day except on Fridays. We were encouraged by the trainers to keep them together as much as possible and the school is accommodating through the end of this school year. Elle is more cautious about the idea of taking him to high school so we will see what the fall brings as she will be starting at Portsmouth High School in September.

Hope to see you and continue comparing notes!

      Best wishes,
